So here's the rest of the Freudian ego model. I talked about the ID being the child that wants what it wants when it wants it.
Then there is the EGO. The Ego attempts to mediate between the Id and reality. It’s functions include judgment, tolerance, reality testing, control, planning, defense, synthesis of information, intellectual functioning, and memory. The ego separates out what is real. It helps us to organize our thoughts and make sense of them and the world around us. "The ego is that part of the id which has been modified by the direct influence of the external world. The ego represents reason and common sense. . It most immediately controls thought and behavior. So it appears the Ego has a very good and necessary role in this game. So why are we told to "let go of our Ego." ? I believe we have to look at the third factor in this model to answer that question.
